Our Speaker: Carlie Shover
Carlie Shover planned to go to medical school after graduating from college, but through a deeper relationship with the Lord in prayer, she felt a call to the healing of the whole person in ministry.
At the start of her first full-time year with Damascus, which offers camps, retreats, and other resources to help people encounter Jesus, Carlie said she heard the Lord whisper to her, “Daughter, you are going to see more healing here than you would have in medicine.” Now in her fourth year as a missionary, she says He has done just that. “The Lord has allowed me to witness and take part in the healing of hearts, bodies, and souls, as He desires full restoration for each of His sons and daughters.”
Raised in a vibrant Catholic home in Milan, O., with three older sisters, Carlie has loved Jesus and His Church from a young age. In early middle school, she was captivated by the saints and Mary and knew that the Lord was real, that He loved her, and that she wanted to live her life with Him. Going into her freshman year of high school, she attended a Steubenville Youth Conference, where she experienced a powerful moment in Eucharistic adoration. “I gave my ‘yes’ to Jesus that night,” she said. In high school, she began attending daily Mass and while a student at the Ohio State University, she had another Eucharistic encounter at a SEEK conference and felt convicted to go “all-in” for Christ.
Then after months of prayer, it became clear she was called to ministry with Damascus. After graduating cum laude from OSU, she moved to Centerburg, Ohio, to prepare to work with middle and high school girls at Catholic Youth Summer Camp.
Carlie went on to serve two summers in counseling leadership for the Northwoods camp in northern Wisconsin and since August of 2023, has worked full-time for Damascus in Ohio, managing the recruitment team and overseeing relationships with college campuses and apostolates as well as the mentorship and formation of summer missionaries.
She also is studying for a master’s degree in psychology, specializing in marriage and family, at Divine Mercy University.
“The beautiful summation of my story,” Carlie said, “is that the Lord is real, He is good, and He loves us. He desires relationship with each of us. Relationship with Him changed my life. And He is changing thousands of others’ lives too, each and every day. The Catholic Church is beautiful and very much alive. I desire to lead others into authentic relationship with God the Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, and the beauty of the Catholic Church. My hero, John Paul II, said that ‘Life with Christ is a wonderful adventure.'”
Carlie has much more to share about her ongoing adventure with Christ. Make your reservation now to hear her talk on Nov. 9, and plan to invite a daughter, granddaughter, niece, or friend.

History of Our Lady of the Lake Huron Chapter
(Diocese of Toledo, Ohio)
Est. 2006
The Huron Chapter of Magnificat, also known as Our Lady of the Lake Chapter, was founded in 2006 to serve women in the northern part of the Toledo Catholic Diocese. We currently meet quarterly in Fremont, O., for a breakfast, praise and worship, prayer, and a talk by a woman who tells how God has worked in her life. At our Magnificat meals, we try to provide something for each woman to take home with her by offering a packet of spiritual reading at each place setting.
Our chapter grew out of a prayer group that had gathered weekly in Huron, O., for more than 30 years. We decided to form a chapter of Magnificat as we realized the need to share our love of Jesus Christ with more Catholic women. At our first Magnificat meal on February 3, 2007, Donna Jones of Detroit shared the story of how she and her husband, Alex, a former Pentecostal minister, came into the Catholic Church. Since then, we have had heard many other stories of faith from some remarkable women. We record each of the talks and make CDs of them, including the most recent, available for purchase.
In addition to gathering quarterly for the Magnificat meal, we also host an annual retreat each January and seek to promote opportunities for spiritual growth in and around the diocese.
